David C. Leavy's career moves in a clear line: public service, corporate affairs, operational leadership and, in 2023, the chief operating officer role at CNN Worldwide. Each stage built on the one before it.
The progression is unusual for a media executive. Now based in Washington, D.C., David Leavy took a path into media leadership that ran through government rather than a newsroom or a studio, and his first senior public role was speaking for the National Security Council. In the decades that followed, the skills he developed there became the foundation for broader responsibilities.
The White House years
In the Clinton administration, Leavy served as Chief Spokesman and Senior Director of Public Affairs for the National Security Council, and as Deputy Press Secretary for Foreign Affairs at the White House. The work placed him at the point where foreign policy decisions met public explanation.
Communications in that setting answers to a different standard than corporate messaging. Statements carry diplomatic and security implications, and accuracy is not optional. That experience established a discipline of accountability and precision that shaped his approach in the private sector.
Two decades at Discovery
Leavy then joined Discovery, where he would spend more than twenty years. Over that period his responsibilities widened, and he eventually served as Chief Corporate Operations Officer of Discovery Inc., with a hand in many of the company's major strategic initiatives.
Among them were the 2008 NASDAQ listing, the acquisition of Scripps Networks Interactive, the Olympic rights agreement with Eurosport and the 2021 launch of discovery+. Each marked a different phase of the company's growth, and each required coordination across functions that rarely share a reporting line.
Corporate affairs, then operations
When Discovery and WarnerMedia combined in 2022, Leavy became Chief Corporate Affairs Officer of Warner Bros. Discovery, responsible for global government relations, public policy, social responsibility and corporate marketing. The role drew directly on his public-sector background: it required credibility with policymakers as well as with commercial partners.
In June 2023, he was appointed chief operating officer of CNN Worldwide, with responsibility for commercial, operational and promotional activities across the network. The scope of that CNN remit marked a shift from managing a company's external relationships to running a large share of a business directly.
Conclusion
Taken together, the stages of David Leavy's career describe a single professional identity rather than a series of unrelated titles: a communicator trained in government who became an operator in media. Alongside his executive roles, he serves as a trustee of Colby College and co-chair of the Salisbury School board, both covered in a fuller account of his career.
